Your shipment arrives, you open the package, and something doesn't look right. Maybe the vial is cracked. Maybe the lyophilized cake is yellow when it should be white. Maybe there's visible moisture inside the vial. Maybe the stopper looks compromised. The discipline most researchers haven't been trained in is what to actually do at that moment — because the wrong response (using the material anyway, or panicking and disposing of a vial that's actually fine) can both cost real research time. Every shipment receipt deserves a quick two-layer inspection — external packaging first, then individual vials. The whole process takes less than two minutes and catches the issues that matter.


Layer 1: External Packaging


Before opening anything, look at the box:

  • Crushing or visible damage? Could indicate mishandling in transit.

  • Signs of heat exposure? Discolored exterior, melted tape, or warped material in summer shipping suggests the package sat in heat.

  • Cold pack present (if expected)? If your shipment included cold packs, check whether they're still cool. (Lyophilized peptides don't strictly require cold packs in short transit, but their condition tells you about transit thermal exposure.)

  • Carrier tracking shows extended delay? A package that took 7+ days domestically across Canada warrants extra scrutiny of contents.


External damage doesn't necessarily mean vial damage — sealed lyophilized peptide is remarkably tolerant of rough handling — but external signals tell you to look at vials more carefully.


Layer 2: Individual Vials


Now look at each vial:

  • Glass integrity: No cracks, no chips, no signs the vial took a hit. A cracked vial that's still sealed by the stopper has lost cold-chain and sterile integrity.

  • Stopper integrity: The rubber stopper should sit flat and tight in the vial neck. A raised, popped-up, or dislodged stopper means the seal is compromised.

  • Crimp seal (aluminum cap): Intact, no signs of being pried open or damaged.

  • Vial contents — the lyophilized cake: Should be intact and the expected color (almost always white to off-white for standard research peptides).

  • Visible moisture inside the vial: A small amount of condensation on the inside of the vial can sometimes appear briefly when going from refrigeration to room temperature, but persistent visible moisture, water droplets, or a visibly wet cake is a problem.

  • Particulates floating in the vial: Lyophilized cake fragments are normal; foreign particles are not.


Color and Cake Appearance — What's Normal and What's Not


The lyophilized cake is the single most visually informative part of vial inspection. Common observations and what they mean:


Normal:

  • White to off-white cake. Standard color for most research peptides.

  • Pale yellow tint on copper-containing peptides. GHK-Cu specifically often has a faint blue-to-pale-yellow appearance because of the copper. This is expected for the copper tripeptide, not a degradation signal.

  • Cake that has detached from the vial bottom. Cake "lifting" or detaching as a discrete puck is normal and doesn't indicate damage; the lyophilization process can produce this.

  • Small cracks in the cake. Cosmetic, common, not a quality issue.


Concerning:

  • Visibly melted or collapsed cake. Suggests the vial got warm enough during transit for the cake structure to compromise.

  • Wet appearance or visible liquid. Indicates moisture intrusion into a vial that should be dry.

  • Black, red, or any unexpected color. Anything off-spectrum from expected color warrants immediate caution.


The Decision: Use, Hold, or Return


The inspection results put a vial in one of three categories:


Use — proceed normally:

  • External packaging fine, vial intact, stopper sealed, lyophilized cake the expected color and form. No anomalies. Refrigerate per Peptide Storage Guide and proceed with research.

Hold — investigate before using:

  • Minor anomaly that doesn't clearly indicate damage. For example: cake detached from vial bottom but otherwise normal-looking (cosmetic), or one vial in a multi-vial shipment looks slightly different from the others. Refrigerate, photograph the issue, and contact the supplier for guidance before reconstituting.

Return / Replace — don't use:

  • Clear damage. Cracked or chipped vial, compromised stopper, yellow/brown discoloration on white peptides, melted or collapsed cake, visible moisture, unexpected color. Refrigerate immediately to limit further degradation while you sort it out. Contact the supplier with photographs and the COA / lot number for replacement.


How to Document the Issue for Your Supplier


When you contact the supplier about a damaged or discolored vial, what they'll need:

  1. Order number and date of arrival.

  2. Photograph of the external packaging if external damage was relevant.

  3. Clear photograph of the vial showing the issue. Good lighting, sharp focus, frame so the issue is obvious. Multiple angles help.

  4. The lot/batch number on the vial.

  5. The COA's lot number (should match the vial; document any mismatch).

  6. Description of what looks off in plain language.
